Orthodontics For Adults

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21. With today's less visible braces, including Invisalign, adults can feel comfortable about the way they look while in treatment. Research shows that patients who have undergone orthodontic treatment are better dental patients. They are more likely to practice good dental hygiene and make regular visits to their dentist.

By age 35, three out of four adults have some form of periodontal disease. Also, crowding typically occurs in the lower front teeth, making teeth harder to keep clean (which may aggravate an existing periodontal problem, or lead to one). Orthodontic treatment results in better dental health. Adults that may already have some breakdown or loss of their teeth or the bone that supports the teeth, may require periodontal treatment before, during, and/or after orthodontic treatment. Bone loss can also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable.

In a small number of cases seen in our office, the adult patient's bite is so severe that we need to consider jaw surgery. In some of these cases, the patient may decide to only straighten the teeth and not worry about the bite. We can discuss this to determine your level of comfort and treatment goals.
